Dry Needling

Dry Needling

Dry needling is one of the most effective tools available for releasing stubborn muscle tension, reducing pain, and restoring normal movement patterns. Dr. Luba Khakham is certified in dry needling (Cert DN) and integrates it into treatment plans for both orthopedic and pelvic floor conditions — often with results patients feel in the same session.

How it works:

Dry needling involves inserting thin, sterile needles into trigger points — tight, irritated knots in muscle tissue that cause local and referred pain. Unlike acupuncture, which is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, dry needling is a technique grounded in Western anatomy and neuroscience.  The needle creates a brief, involuntary twitch in the muscle, releasing the trigger point and allowing the tissue to relax. Many patients feel immediate relief in the treated area, along with reduced tension in surrounding muscles.

Conditions treated with dry needling:

• Neck and shoulder tension

• Low back pain and sciatica

• Hip flexor and IT band tightness

• Headaches and jaw (TMJ) pain

• Pelvic floor muscle hypertonia (overactive pelvic floor)

• Plantar fasciitis

• Post-surgical scar tissue and muscle guarding

What to expect:

Dry needling at Sage PT is always part of a broader treatment plan — not a standalone procedure. Dr. Luba will assess which muscles are contributing to your pain before recommending needling, and will explain the process fully before beginning. Sessions are typically 10–20 minutes of needling within a standard PT visit.
